| What is FTP? |
| File Transfer Protocol
(FTP) is the method used for uploading your files to your ROCKMM Web
web-space. It is the Internet standard for transfering files from one
computer to another.
FTP was originally based around typing in instructions to get it to
do what you, but nowadays there are many programs that provide easy to
use buttons and windows (with extensive help pages).
|
| I don't have my FTP username and
password? |
If you have forgotten your Username or
Password for your FTP account you can request the details by emailing
support@rockmmweb.co.uk
IMPORTANT! Please remember to include the domain name in the message.
|
| What program should I use? |
| Most FTP clients have the same basic
layout, functionality, and price. Choosing one is simply a matter of
personal preference. Some of the more popular clients for Windows-based
computers include
WS_FTP,
CuteFTP,
and
BulletProof FTP
and for Macintosh computers include
Fetch, and
Interarchy.
|
| How do I setup my FTP program?
|
| All clients come with documentation,
and it shouldn't take you long to figure out how to get started.
But here are a few basics: To FTP, you will need to know the host
location (i.e. www.domain-name.com), as well as your username and
password. All your web site contents is stored in
mainwebsite_html directory.
To setup up your FTP program you will either be confronted with a
window when you load up your FTP program or you will have to go to the
set-up (usually 'options' or 'properties') option on one of the dropdown
menu's.
|
| Permission Errors |
I've just uploaded my website and
when I go to visit my page, I get an error message saying I haven't got
permission to access '/'.
When an Internet browser looks at your web space, it will search for an
index page and then display it. If it cannot find the index page an
error message is displayed saying you do not have permission to access
'/'.
On the ROCKMM Web servers the index page must be called index.html
(or index.shtml) to be recognised. Please do not use capital letters at
the beginning of the index file name as it will cause viewing problems.
